Gaddafi Son Confirmed Dead After Being Shot

(MENAFN) Libya's top prosecutorial authority verified in the early hours of Wednesday that Saif al-Islam Gaddafi—the son of deceased dictator Muammar Gaddafi—died following a fatal shooting incident that occurred the previous day.

According to an official statement published on the Prosecutor General's Office's Facebook page Wednesday morning, investigators acting under the Prosecutor General's authorization immediately deployed to relevant sites after receiving reports concerning Saif al-Islam Muammar Gaddafi's death. Their mission: collect evidence and interview witnesses during the preliminary inquiry phase.

The prosecutorial body's announcement detailed that Tuesday saw a specialized investigative unit—supported by forensic specialists in ballistics, fingerprint analysis, toxicology, and additional technical disciplines—execute a comprehensive field examination. Initial investigative results determined that the deceased suffered lethal gunshot trauma.

Hours before the official confirmation, Saif al-Islam Gaddafi's political representatives released a statement late Tuesday declaring he had been murdered earlier that day when four gunmen forcibly entered his home in Zintan, a town located approximately 136 kilometers southwest of Tripoli.

Following the NATO-supported 2011 rebellion that toppled his father's regime, a Tripoli court issued a death sentence in absentia against Saif al-Islam Gaddafi in 2015. Two years later, in 2017, the armed faction controlling Zintan freed him under an amnesty decree from Libya's eastern government.

His last notable public appearance came in November 2021, when he submitted paperwork to run in Libya's presidential race, only to face disqualification by the Libyan High National Elections Commission.
